Precautionary tips when hiking

  • Inquire about the weather because the weather changes are sometimes fast in the mountains. Do not go on the route if the forecast is not suitable
  • Tell your hut manager about your itinerary. He will alert you in case of difficulties on the course and will be a valuable relay for the rescue in case of accident
  • Take a map to help you find out if you get lost. Be attentive to the markings. If you are using a GPS, do not forget the battery backup
  • Leave early to enjoy the freshness of the morning and master your schedule to savor your day
  • Avoid going alone, especially on difficult or uncrowded routes
  • Hike well equipped: warm clothes (gloves and woolonhat can be useful), mountain shoes, sun protection (cap, sunglasses and sunscreen), rain jacket, small first aid kit, flashlight
  • Do not overestimate your abilities, take short, regular breaks. Drink a lot to compensate for the loss due to sweating. Enhance your breaks with a food intake rich in quick sugars (dried fruits, cereal bars).
  • Do not face the snowy slopes without specific equipment (sticks, crampons, ice ax). With snow, easy routes can become critical
  • Be careful in the storm: do not shelter under a tree, avoid proximity to mountain tops and metal objects, isolate yourself from the ground
  • In case of any doubt, give up and turn around (golden rule 1)
